2016 Porongurup Pinot Noir
We aim to make a well flavoured and beautifully textured wine with the distinctive varietal characters typical of the Pinot Noir grape.
We were fortunate to have a generally mild season in 2016. There were no major weather events and the slightly cooler conditions particularly suited the Pinot Noir. With our typical low yields, it was able to ripen slowly in the moderate conditions with very good flavour development and no disease risk. Harvest was completed by the 2nd week of March.
The Pinot was all fermented in small open fermenters with daily plunging by hand to gently extract the colour and flavour from the skins. Once pressed out, the wine was matured in new and older French oak barriques for 15 months before being bottled in July 2017.
Our Porongurup Pinot is beautifully perfumed with a complex nose of cranberry fruits and smoky cherries along with some complexing savoury, earthy notes.
This wine is drinking beautifully with its sweet cranberry fruit flavours and those smoky dark cherry characters. It has great mouthfeel, is well weighted and is very drinkable now. However, with its good acidity and freshness it will also handle several years in the cellar for further complexity.
