2015 Porongurup Pinot Noir
We aim to make a well flavoured and beautifully textured wine with the distinctive varietal characters typical of the Pinot Noir grape. It was generally a cooler season in 2015 with some unseasonal rain in January and February.
This, however, seemed to suit the Pinot Noir and it ripened slowly in the moderate conditions. With our typical low yields, the fruit ripened well with very good flavour development and no disease risk.
Harvest was completed by the 2nd week of March. The Pinot was fermented in small open fermenters which were plunged by hand to gently extract the colour and flavour from the skins. Once pressed out, the wine was matured in new and older French oak barriques for 16 months before being bottled in August 2016.
Our Porongurup Pinot is quite perfumed with a complex nose of smoky cherries, with some earthiness and a hint of spice and prosciutto.
This wine has a fine palate with the sweet fruit flavours of cranberry, fresh cherry and complex dark cherries. These lovely fresh fruit flavours are complemented by the gentle, lightly drying tannins.
It has great mouthfeel, is well weighted and totally drinkable now but with its good acidity and freshness it will handle several years in the cellar for further complexity.
