2015 'Home Block' Pinot Noir
This is just our second release of “Home Block”, a ‘reserve’ Pinot Noir made entirely from our first plantings on our Porongurup vineyard, 30kms east of Mt Barker and 40kms north of Albany in the cool, Great Southern region of Western Australia. The 2015 season had its challenges with some unseasonal rain early in the ripening period. This, however, seems to have suited the Pinot as it ripened in slightly cooler conditions with few very hot days to upset this sometimes-fickle variety. The fruit from our low yielding Home Block vineyard was kept separate, crushed and fermented in small open fermenters. It was pressed out after a week and put to barrel for malolactic fermentation; the barriques were all French oak, 50% new and 50% 2nd use. After an initial 10 months maturation, the best four barrels were selected for this ‘Home Block’ label and received a further 6 months maturation in oak. The wine was bottled in August 2016, having had no fining and just the lightest of filtrations.
Beautifully perfumed with intense cherry, dark plum and raspberry fruit aromas. The French oak has contributed the smoky characters and the attractive ‘pancetta’ like aromas.
Has great depth of flavour with the smoky cherry and fresh raspberry fruit characters typical of cool climate Pinot Noir. These intense, fresh berry fruit flavours are beautifully complemented by the slighty charry oak characters from its maturation period. This wine has a lovely weight with the great depth of flavour on the mid palate balanced by the lightly drying tannin astringency towards the finish which adds to its great length of flavour.
Deceptively drinkable now (pair it with your favourite duck dish) we are confident this Pinot will continue to improve with many more years in the bottle; eg, till 2023 and beyond.
Production limited to 100 dozen.
Released May 2017.
