2016 'Home Block' Pinot Noir
This is the third release of our “Home Block” Pinot Noir, a ‘reserve’ Pinot made entirely from our first plantings on our Porongurup vineyard, 30kms east of Mt Barker and 40kms north of Albany in the cool, Great Southern region of Western Australia.
The 2016 ripening season was atypical as we had some heavy rain in late January; highly unusual in the Great Southern. Although initially concerning, it proved very fortuitous as the vines then had their best canopies in years as a result! Fine conditions thereafter ensured no risk of disease and the vines were well set for the rest of the season. The warm days and cool nights which then prevailed very much suited the Pinot; it ripened slowly in the temperate conditions with few very hot days to upset this sometimes fickle variety. The fruit from our low yielding ‘Home Block’ vineyard (mostly the ‘Droopy’ and ‘Upright’ clones) was kept separate, crushed and fermented in small open fermenters. It was pressed out after a week and put to barrel for malolactic fermentation; the barriques were all French oak, 50% new and 50% 2nd use. After an initial 10 months maturation, the best four barrels were selected for this ‘Home Block’ label and received a further 4 months maturation in oak. The wine was bottled in May ‘17, having had the lightest of egg white finings and a very light filtration.
Beautifully perfumed with intense dark plum and spiced cherry fruit aromas. The French oak has contributed the smoky characters and the attractive pancetta &/or prosciutto-like aromas.
Has great depth of flavour with the smoky plum and spiced cherry fruit characters typical of cool climate Pinot Noir. These intense, fresh berry fruit flavours are beautifully complemented by the slightly charry oak characters from its maturation period. This wine has a lovely weight with great depth of flavour on the mid palate, a gentle fresh acidity and the lightly drying tannin astringency towards the finish contributing to its great length of flavour.
Deceptively drinkable now (pair it with your favourite duck dish) we’re very confident our Home Block will continue to improve with many more years in the bottle, eg 6 - 8 years or so.
Production limited to 100 dozen. Released May 2018
