2014 'Home Block' Pinot Noir
This is our first release of the Home Block, a reserve Pinot Noir made entirely from our original plantings on our Porongurup vineyard, 30kms east of Mt Barker and 40kms north of Albany in the cool, Great Southern region of Western Australia.
In most seasons we have produced a single Porongurup Pinot Noir but, from the very handy 2014 vintage, we produced two separate Pinots. The fruit from the Home Block vineyard was kept separate, crushed and fermented in small open fermenters. It was pressed out after a week and put to barrel for malolactic fermentation; the barriques were all French oak, 50% new and 50% 2nd use. After an initial 9 months maturation, the best four barrels were selected for the Home Block label and this parcel of wine had a further 4 months maturation in oak. The wine was bottled in June 2015, having had no fining or filtration.
Beautifully perfumed with rich cherry and smoky plum fruit aromas and a slight earthiness adding complexity.
Fresh and vibrant fruit flavours of dark cherry with hints of raspberry. The smoky, fresh berry fruit flavours are complexed by the light, charry oak characters. This wine has a lovely weight, with great depth of flavour on the mid palate and a gentle, tannin astringency adding to the length of flavour. The sweet fruit flavours on the finish are beautifully balanced by the delicately drying tannins.
Deceptively drinkable now, we are confident this Pinot will continue to improve with many more years in the bottle; eg, till 2022 and beyond
