2017 'Home Block' Pinot Noir

This is our fourth release of our “Home Block” Pinot Noir, a ‘reserve’ Pinot made entirely from our first plantings on our Porongurup vineyard, 30kms east of Mt Barker and 40kms north of Albany in the cool, Great Southern region of Western Australia.

The 2017 ripening season was generally a little cooler than average across the Great Southern; vintage started later and ripening was a little slower. These conditions very much suited our Pinot as the slow accumulation of the grape sugars allowed for maximum flavour development while retaining natural acidity. The mild days and cool nights were ideal for this sometimes fickle variety whereas hot conditions in early March could ripen the fruit too quickly. The fruit from our low yielding ‘Home Block’ vineyard (mostly the ‘Droopy’ and ‘Upright’ clones) was kept separate, crushed and fermented in small open fermenters. It was pressed out after a week and put to barrel for malolactic fermentation; the barriques were all French oak, half new and half were 2nd use. After an initial 10 months maturation, the best four barrels were selected for this ‘Home Block’ label and received a further 4 months maturation in oak. The wine was bottled in July 2018, having had the lightest of egg white finings and a very light filtration.

Beautifully perfumed with sweet, smoky aromas, some light cherry characters and strawberry notes. The French oak has contributed to the sweet, smoky characters and the light ‘pancetta’ aromas.

Our 2017 is deceptively delicate for being in the riper spectrum and is quite complex for such a young wine. It is not overtly fruity; it has a cohesive palate with some gentle, smoky fruit flavours. This Pinot Noir is classically ‘Porongurup’ with its fineness and delicacy; it has texture and palate weight rather than simple fruit flavours. The gentle acid profile and light tannin structure provide great length of flavour and will ensure this wine continues to develop with further cellaring.

Deceptively drinkable now (pair it with your favourite duck dish) we’re very confident our Home Block will continue to improve with many more years in the bottle, eg 6 - 8 years or so.

Production limited to 100 dozen. Released May 2018
