The 2018 vintage was one of the kindest on record. We enjoyed perfect growing conditions over the spring, followed by perfect conditions over the summer ripening period; no weather extremes, no disease risk, no pesky silvereyes…as good a vintage we have ever experienced and we’d would love to be able to dial up a season like that every year!
We’ve rebadged our Porongurup Shiraz as ‘Syrah’ this year in recognition of its cool climate style and origins. (In France’s northern Rhone Valley it’s known as ‘Syrah’, as well as in other cool growing sites eg NZ). Still 100% Porongurup grown, our vines are now over 20 years old and the Shiraz has proven to be well suited to our very gravelly, north facing site.
A super deep red, very youthful colour with a crimson-purple hue.
This is typical cool climate Shiraz with a good depth of lovely spicy fruit aromatics. There are fresh, distinctive, peppery characters on the nose complexed by the spicy aromas (a touch of cinnamon/mixed spice character?).
Our 2018 Syrah has loads of spicy fruit flavours tightly held together with its light acidity and slightly chewy tannins. A few months maturation in oak has added some complexity without losing the depth & freshness of the fruit; it is well flavoured and ripe while still having some subtlety and finesse. The generous fruit flavours allow you to enjoy our Syrah immediately (it is imminently drinkable!) though it will also continue to develop with further bottle age. Would be a match with any well flavoured dish.
