2016 Cabernet Merlot

The majority of this fruit was sourced from mature vineyards in Mt Barker (82%) with a smaller amount from Frankland and a touch from Margaret River; these sites are warmer (than Porongurup) and have proven to be better suited to these late ripening varieties. The Cabernet Sauvignon does especially well In the Great Southern, producing a moderate crop of well coloured, well flavoured fruit which is then the great basis for this wine. This year’s blend is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9.5% Merlot, with a touch of Malbec and Shiraz to complete the wine blend.

AROMA

Attractive nose with loads of dark berry fruit aromas complexed by the smoky oak characters picked up during barrel maturation.

PALATE

This is a well flavoured and well structured wine with lovely sweet black berry fruits on the palate, a good clean acidity and a gentle tannin structure. The generous dark berry fruit flavours are well integrated after its time in French oak plus a few months in bottle. Cabernet Sauvignon is renowned for its fine structure and persistence of flavour and palate length and the Merlot (with the Malbec & Shiraz) only adds to this; producing a wine that is approachable now and will also handle further bottle age.

CELLARING

Can be enjoyed now with a full flavoured meal or leave in the cellar for a few years for further bottle age complexity.
