This is a variety particularly well suited to the Great Southern and especially the Porongurups, with its generally cooler ripening conditions and cooler overnight temperatures. Typically, the Riesling wines made from this region are crisp and dry and can age well.
We enjoyed another good season in 2015. Good rains in spring meant we had good soil moisture and good canopy growth leading into the summer. We then had some warmer than average days during the ripening period but these were balanced by the cooler overnight temperatures which especially suits Riesling; we got really good flavour development while still retaining natural acidity. All the fruit was harvested at night when as cold as possible and then processed promptly at the winery to avoid any risk of oxidation. Only the free run juice was used and fermented at cool temperatures with a neutral yeast to maximize the delicacy inherent in this variety.
This has beautiful aromatics; the sweet lime and kaffir leaf characters are typical of Porongurup Riesling. There are some minerally characters and delicate floral aromas but the lime fruit characters are the most distinctive.
The 2015 Riesling is a beautifully fine and crisp dry wine. It is a little fuller flavoured than last year with lovely, quite concentrated, sweet lime fruit flavours. It still has a good crisp acidity and excellent persistence of flavour. The clean, tangy finish means it's a great wine to serve as an aperitif, or it would be well matched with any fresh seafood.
Riesling like this is fantastic at any age. Enjoy while fresh and young or cellar for some bottle age complexity. This wine should continue to drink well for 5 + years.
