Mount Trio Red Wine - Shiraz

2011 Shiraz

Our aim is to produce a well flavoured and well structured wine with the peppery and spicy fruit characters typical of cool climate Shiraz.

The 2011 vintage was another good one for the district, being relatively fine across most of the Great Southern. There was no disease risk, few troublesome 'silver eyes' (so no bird damage) and the fruit was able to ripen fully with the perfect conditions of fine days with cooler evenings.

We harvested the Shiraz from our Porongurup 'Gravel Pit' vineyard in early April, with a small amount of additional fruit from Mount Barker. Both sites are well suited to this variety and the low crop levels in the vineyards produced relatively small bunches of fruit with great concentration of colour and flavour.

AROMA

Our 2011 Shiraz has the typical cool climate aromas of liquorice and spicy plum fruit. The light aniseed and fennel characters are followed by some gorgeous black pepper aromas which are characteristic of Porongurup and the Great Southern.

PALATE

This wine has loads of spiced plum and cherry flavours as well as spicy black pepper characters. It’s quite a full flavoured wine with good palate weight and structure. The good drying tannins and fine acidity contribute to its good length of flavour.

CELLARING

This wine has very attractive spicy fruit flavours and can be enjoyed right now with a good wedge of cheese! It also has the tannin structure to handle several years of bottle maturation and we would expect this wine to continue to improve and drink well until 2018 or so.
